In the heart of Kibera—one of Africa’s largest informal settlements—young women aged 15 to 21 gather to explore the links between environmental care and the quality of our daily lives. Together, we have streamed the Wangari Maathai documentary, reflecting on Kenya’s colonial history and the roots of environmental justice; planted seedlings as a promise to the future; and rolled up our sleeves to clear a section of the Nairobi River for a healthier present.
What stood out most was the spirit these young women brought—present, open-hearted, and ready to take on tasks that were both challenging and new. In their energy and collaboration, we witnessed the creative power of women: the power to nurture, to restore, and to imagine a sustainable, human-centered world for us all.
